I did not know you could use GSM modems with network-manager ;-). I still 
use the old pppd scripts I wrote when I bought my first GSM phone, 
altered little bits over the years. My starting point at that time were 
some README's in the docs off Gnokii. These old scripts still work fine 
with 8.04.1
