Firefox32 and Thunderbird

I'm running Gutsy on an AMD 64.  I use thunderbird as my mailer 
(evolution doesn't do PGP) and I have a 32 bit version of firefox 
installed so that I can use it with applets and such.  

The only problem I'm having with this setup is that firefox refuses to 
open thunderbird when I click on a mailto link. 

Does anyone know where to specify this.. or what the problem could be.  
BTW, I do have thunderbird specified in my preferred applications.
