Overheating Laptop

Top ought to tell you alright, if something is hogging all the cpu cycles, 
wouldn't the system logs show what was causing the errors?  Xorg takes the 
most cpu time on my system but it never remains the same.  It drops off to 
nearly nothing at times and jumps up while opening screens.  I run KDE on my 
machine so have KSystemLog but surely Gnome has something similar.
