    OK. Now I understand. Well an earphone is also a magnetic mike and 
will work fine. But the way it sounds is the Dell Laptop has mis-wired 
the mike plug.

    Also I do not know what Kubuntu might have wrong. I don't run it 
here. I let others complain about the 64 bit and K models :-)
