OK, I've tried to install the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (by 
going to the restricted drivers manager), but when I reboot the X server 
doesn't come up.

I've also tried to install the NVIDIA graphics driver manually but when 
I try to kill the GDM, the machine hangs.

Can you help with these more specific questions?
