Ubuntu not using the swap partition

I don't think so:

As somebody else pointed out, since swap isn't a filesystem, it shouldn't
appear in df - even in CentOS.

As long as you have an entry in /etc/fstab like:
  <SOMETHING> none swap sw 0 0
you're fine.  <SOMETHING> will probably be a UUID= string, as it was created
by the installer, but could just as easily be /dev/hdc1
