That's stretching the truth a bit
They give a decent amount to open office, but their main interest
there is learning from the OSS they donate to so they can release
their closed source Star Office package. (not entirely friendly if you
ask me)
Open Solaris is now OSS yes, but it has strings attached as well.
and Java was only released to the GPL last week from memory...
If you want to name a mega corp that's donating massive amounts into
the GPL and the like, go look at IBM.
Those guys looked into their crystal ball and saw that the future is
services based... so their entire business model is all about making
the most of that.
OSS fits very nicely with that model and allows you to profit greatly from OSS.
