Ubuntu upgrade broke my resolution setup and I can't get it back!

I had the same issue with a geforce 6600 card, also used to use envy. It 
seems the only way to get at the xorg.0.log for the failed boot is by 
bailing out to text mode - It only keeps 2, and there are 2 X restarts 
involved in getting back up with the failsafe config.

My solution was installing the binary driver from nvidia. In order to 
get that to load, I also needed to edit 
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-restricted and comment out the nvidia module 
there (just put a # in front of it).
