fsck want's to check one of my raid-5 partitions - how do i stop it?

hi list.

i've stumbled upon a fix for my issue.

1.  fail /dev/sdc1 in the raid array
2.  format /dev/sdc1 with a filesystem (i used ext3)
3.  boot ubuntu normally
4.  let ubuntu run its disk check
5.  delete /dev/sdc1
6.  create a new partition for my degraded raid array
7.  add the new partition back to the array and rebuild

done.

anyone know if i could have saved this trouble by using tune2fs or
something like that?
