moving from 7.10 to 8.04

I don't know if this will help but ...

This sounds a little like the boot problem I had. I added the
initrd line (it was missing) to the grub entry to boot up then
I added the initrd line to the grub menu.lst and corrected the
problem.

At the grub boot menu hit e (for edit), then move the cursor down
2 lines then hit O (the letter, oh) the I think it C for the command
line, then enter this line:

initrd          /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-16-generic

I added this line at boot under the kernel line and it allowed me
to boot. I then edited the /boot/grub/menu.lst file with the same
line. I think you might also want to do the:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

This may finish the upgrade process.
