Ubuntu 8.04 Video Issues

Hello:

I've done a clean install of Ubuntu 8.04 and am having video issues that
I don't have with Ubuntu 6.06 on the same machine.

My video card is an ATI RADEON 7000. I'm willing to consider replacing
the card but I'd prefer to get it working. :-)

1. Using the standard configuration in menu.lst, I lose video output
almost immediately after shutting down or restarting. I don't see the
shutdown splash screen. If I restart, video output doesn't return until
the GRUB menu displays.

This is only an issue with the splash screen enabled; if I remove the
"splash" parameter, video works about the same as in 6.06.

2. In the past I've used xvidtune to determine settings in order to
center my screen. Under 8.04, when I click the Test button in xvidtune I
get the following message:

"You have requested a mode-line that is not possible, or not supported
by your hardware configuration."

I tried temporarily changing the xorg.conf file to use settings from
6.06 but the changes had no effect.

I booted from the 8.04 Live CD on another PC that has a low-end NVidia
card; it doesn't have either of these issues.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

Steve
