Well, if you want to use fdisk, you should use the disk, not the
partition. That's why it is called fdisk and not fpartition :) As fdisk
doesn't see a partition table at /dev/sdf1 it complains about a bad disk.
The partition table is at /dev/sdf instead.
Now if you mount something it is not an entire disk but a partition, which
would be /dev/sdf1.
