Mount USB HDD to a certain /media/folder after boot

Maybe. If my USB disks didn't mount when I plug them in, I would start
by looking at the log files. E.g., I'd run "tail -f /var/log/messages" -
this always shows the last few lines from this log file. Then I would
plug in the disk and check this output

Well, but since AFAICT no user input whatsoever is needed to make
external USB disks mount automatically (at least as long as one runs the
Desktop version of Ubuntu; otherwise there is, however, still a better
method than mucking with fstab), I don't see why it should work
differently for (1) and (2)

Certainly. But in such a case one should first figure out the cause for
why it does not behave as expected, instead of immediately falling into
wild activity, changing config files left and right ;)

Thanks, and certainly. F1 is not what it once was, unfortunately, but I
am still interested in it and perfectly able to spend a sunny and warm
Sunday not outside, but at home in front of the video projector ;)
Though I will make up for it by going for a big breakfast in the sun
