Just a speculation, but it could be related to large TCP window support.

Try this as root:

echo 0 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling

If window scaling is not negotiated properly, then you will experience
"freezing" on receiving large amounts of output from the router or
switch.
