Forget Atheros, get a Ralink based one, they actually do work right
out of the box, on nearly all Free operating systems now.

The brand to buy to guarantee a Ralink is Edimax (though _some_ Belkin
and Linksys do, but the Belkins don't any more).

Edimax are cheap too!
