OK, so maybe the issue was with an update to the intel X server. Anyway,
I've found a solution to one problem that causes another. Using the i810
X server solves the problem with video, but unfortunately it doesn't
allow me to use my monitor with my laptop. So now I have a problem in
that I need to switch between X servers depending on the intended use of
my laptop. Is there a way that I can do this easily on boot or at the
login screen or in some such way?

Thanks.
