Karl did you make this information available when requesting help
initially? 

It seems to me,  someone would have been able to give you the sudo
workaround in 5 minutes if people had known your error was due to alsa
settings and not an actual h/w problem at all. This could have saved you
days (weeks?) of reinstalls, and version hopping.
