Java plugin choices for ubuntu 8.10

OK following a ubuntu forums example

Seems to suggest gcj and openjdk don't play well together. So I
removed gcj-4.2 and gcj-4.base, and installed icedtea6-plugin. Now I
can get the test site to verify java is working (although the animated
graphic is a bit too high in the window compared to before. But on
testing another page, I get a lot of errors, so this doesn't bode well
as far as java is concerned, it's likely broken.

I have this installed now;

Loading the new york times crossword puzzle works, before it would
load but not respond to keystrokes. That part works now. Other puzzle
sites seem to work but that's not an indication that java is actually
in use, right?

I'm trying to load a crossword on bestcrosswords now and not getting
anywhere. It appears to hang at the point where it tries to start the
java applet.
