external usb disk problems

hi.
Im using Intrepid ibex, and i have an external NTFS USB hard disk , it mounts ok, i can write anything on it, ive downloaded mozilla thunderbird and ive configure it to store the mail mesages on my External USB hard disk, but when i  start thunderbird i have a message "Error storing mail messages. Check you have write permisions on the folder  and enough disk space"
How can i make it work?
