Yes. Both are alternatives. You either use IMAP (with full sync between
all clients, and support for server folders) or POP (sync isn't really
its strength and no folders)... for READING...

Then, for sending, the only option is SMTP.

Now that you have IMAP, you will notice that if you tag a message on the
GMail web interface, that's converted into a folder on your IMAP
client... slick.
