You could try to unload the module for the wireless card and load it
again. I don't know if that really works, but it is at least worth a try.
From what you wrote I suppose you use the b43 kernel module. You can
enter these commands in a terminal after you have installed the firmware:
sudo rmmod b43
sudo modprobe b43
