What is the best option to open .docx, pptx files in Ubuntu LTS 8.04 ?

    You can download example .docx files from:

    http://openxmldeveloper.org/attachment/30.ashx

    I dunno how well they conform to the specs, but I think they'd be 
pretty good since they're intended as examples for developers. Still, ya 
never know!!
