how to sign in as root user?

You can't log in as root, but it's very easy to *su* to root in Ubuntu.
Go to a terminal and type *sudo passwd root*. You will be asked for
your password; this is the one you used when you installed Ubuntu. You
will then be asked (twice) for the new password for root. Enter it, and
root has a password. If you are a sudoer, you can use sudo before any
command and use it as root. Some people (e.g. me) like to use the Unix
convention of su to become root. You have your choice.

cheers,
pete
