problems playing wav

I have a wav file that was given to me by an instructor.  I can play the 
file in Audacity but Kaffine gives me an error about needing a codec.  I 
have also tried playing the file from the command line with aplay.  
There I get:
"aplay: test_wavefile:730: can't play not PCM-coded WAVE-files"
I get the same error with the file after using matlab to do some 
processing of it, but I can play a sound file that I recorded with sound 
recorder without problems. 
Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?
