It can be done without problems. Ubuntu is great with dual booting.
You have two options. Resize the current partition down to make space for a
new ubuntu partition or Wubi. Wubi is great but I recommend the other choice
as its a more "native" install. Just boot the live cd and in that go to
System > Administration > Partition Editor and resize your current windows
ntfs partition. Make two paritions. One for installing ubuntu and one 1-2 GB
swap partition. I suggest that you make the Ubuntu partition ext3. And then
install.
Another thing you could do is a big 3rd partition for storing data in. But
thats optional as Ubuntu can access ntfs partitions ( need to install
ntfsprogs and ntfs-3g packages first ). But you will have to make sure that
any data that you want to access from windows is in the ntfs partition as
windows cannot access ext3. Wait, actually it can. If you install the
software ext2fsd on your windows install, you will support for ext3 on it
too.
So no worries. Just go for resizing current partition and making space for
ubuntu and swap.
If your brother is not going to be bloating it up with way too many
packages, 10 GB should be more than enough as the other data can be stored
in the ntfs partition too.
I dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu. I have three partitions
- 140 GB ntfs to store personal data. This data will be accessible to both
Windows and Ubuntu
- 20 GB ntfs for the XP install
- 20 GB logical partition with :
- - 9 GB ext3 mounted as /home
- - 9 GB ext3 mounted as /
- - 2 GB swap
Works perfectly for me.
