It sounds like you accidentally reduced the window to zero width.
Put the cursor on the left hand edge of the Thunderbird window frame.
The cursor changes to a little left-arrow pointing into a vertical bar.
Without pressing any mouse buttons, move the mouse cursor VERY slowly to
the right, just a millimetre or two. Does the cursor change to a little
right arrow? If so, press the left mouse button and move the mouse
cursor to the right, this will drag open the folders window.
You may have to try this at various points along the left-hand edge
depending on what panes you have set up.
