easily/safely type unicode characters?

I'm not aware of any ctrl-alt-XXXX syntax for Xorg or the console. In 
rxvt-unicode, you can use ctrl-shift-XXXX to enter Unicode characters. 
Copy and paste should then allow you to put those characters into your 
application of choice.
