My laptop that I leave running all the time at the house occasionally
has lockups. Lots of culprits, here. ATI video card. Broadcom WIFI.
Not using Compiz so no desktop effects. Also, this box hasn't been
rebuilt since probably feisty.

With all that being said, it usually happens to me when the box it
just sitting there with the screensaver active. The screensaver
freezes, I lose my mouse, I can't CTRL-ALT-F1, I can't
CTRL-ALT-Backspace. I can, however, usually SSH in from another box
and try to shut the box down. It SEEMS to hang at this point at
unmounting the CIFS shares I keep mounted (a couple of Samba
fileshares on my server that my wife and I share). I run smb4k as my
smb client so that may be the problem. I've noticed here on my laptop
at the office (also running smb4k) that occasionally when I try to
reboot without quitting smb4k before I reboot that it will hang on
unmounting my smb shares. I, like you, have to power the box
completely off and back on to get it to become usable again.

So, that's my experience. Are you mounting any smb shares (whether
through smb4k or otherwise)?
