New 8.04, same problem

I didn't see your other posts, but do you by chance have an nvidia
card? I had same issues until I enabled the restricted drivers and
rebooted (System->Admin->Hardware Drivers). Have to do this again
sometimes if some new kernel updates are installed.
However, I had this issue since version 6.04 (when I switched from ATI->nVidia.
