That works. I always keep this note handy as I generally have to do this
a few times a month on the recycled systems that I convert:

1. Boot from a knoppix CD - I suppose that you could use an Ubuntu Live
CD, but in all honesty I've never managed to get an ULCD to operate
properly on older hardware - besides, the Knoppix HW drivers just seem
to always work.
2. Set a knoppix root password (it's in the menus under Knoppix).
3. Bring up a browser
4. Download chntpw
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/admin/chntpw
5. Click on i386 in that package to download the .deb file & it then
loads to the Knoppix desktop as an icon.
6. Mount the windows drive from the Knoppix desktop: right click|Mount
7. Right clicked on the mounted windows drive icon (hda1 was mine) and
set it for read/write. The drive *must* be set to R/W for chntpw to work.
8. From the Knoppix desktop, click on the chntpw file icon that was
downloaded (chntpw_0.99.5-0+nmu1_i386.deb) and follow all the prompts to
install.
8. Open a terminal window in Knoppix & then cd to:
hda1/WINDOWS/System32/config

cd mnt
 cd hda1/WINDOWS/System32/config

9. sudo chnptw -l SAM
to list the usernames

10. sudo chntpw -u <username> SAM
and follow the prompts.

I set the Administrator PW to blank (recommended) by entering the '*'
(askterisk) at the password prompt.
