Sun Java Installation Issues

Thanks a heap to Diogo B?hm and NoOp for the excellent instructions and 
options. I used Synaptic to install java as I am still an ubuntu 
freshie. I have had a look at my Firefox browser in the addons and can 
not find java listed.

HAving installed java using Synaptic how do I go about configuring it to 
work in my browser? I am now lost as to where it has been installed and 
how to make the symbolic link. I have tested for the installation and I 
apparently do not have java installed on my machine.
