Why is it that the simplest thing is the thing you wait until the end to 
try?  I unplugged the printer and plugged it back in.  That appeared to 
clear whatever was hanging around in its memory, I guess.  At that 
point, even the on-off switch wouldn't work on it so totally removing 
power was the only option.  It works and I'm back in business.
