URL's in a e-mail msg will not startup firefox...???

I would assume that it will attempt to use the GNOME configured default
application for web browsing.  Check the setting sunder System >
Preferences > Preferred Applications.

My next step in troubleshooting would be to launch Thunderbird from a
terminal emulator and watch the output when I click on a URL in an
E-Mail.  Might give you a clue as to why it's failing.
