Wubi installs, but freezes on boot.

Hello,

I am trying to get Ubuntu installed on a new Compaq Presario
CQ60-210US laptop (AMD Athlon X2 64). The machine runs Windows
beautifully and seems ideal for trying other operating systems.

Seeing that Wubi was a new option, I tried it. At no point did Wubi
ask me if I wanted to install an AMD version, or 32 or 64 bit; it did
the install with minimal configuration. Wubi downloaded files and
completed the installation.

Upon restart, Ubuntu starts to load but then freezes at about the
third bar in the loading screen. The Caps Lock key flashes. A few
other people in these and other forums have posted similar issues with
AMD/HP machines.

I am looking for a definitive response as to what causes this problem
and how it can be resolved. It seems to me that there is either 1) an
incorrect kernel being loaded or 2) ACPI incompatibility. Wubi uses a
drive container and I honestly don't know how to proceed with editing
a GRUB from there (I'd rather use a drive container than set up a
dedicated partition).

Do I need a specific Ubuntu installation? One called "alternate" was
mentioned; how do I choose the correct kernel? Can I get this to work
with the drive container?

Thanks for any help.
