Setting up partitions for dual-boot (w/ WinXP) via Intrepid installer

I'm trying to set up a dual-boot system by adding Intrepid to my WinXP
machine - this requires that I resize (shrink) the NTFS partition. However,
in the installer, I don't see the option to do that (which is referred to in
the docs & several people have told me it exists). The options presented to
me are a) guided - use the whole disc b) manual. (neither of which can
resize existing partitions).

I'm guessing that the resize option only appears when there is enough
contiguous free space on the disc (which I don't have). So, beyond
defragging aggressively and reducing the page file size in Windows, is there
any other way to gain contiguous disc space?

I did try to use Gparted to re-partition, but it tells me I have bad sectors
so it cannot resize the partition safely. To fix that, run chkdsk /f /r and
reboot twice, then use ntfsresize's --bad-sectors option to resize. Is it
really safe to do that? Do I still need to worry about creating contiguous
free space if I use that option?

Is there some reason to use the installer vs Gparted (vs something else?) to
setup the partitions? Probably the installer will be easiest, but only if I
can get the option to show up.
