DVD-Writer issues Ubuntu Linux

I am running K3b 1.0.5 and Ubuntu 8.10. 8 times out of 10, when creating a new
data DVD with the above, the verify function fails. About half of that time,
after ejecting the completed DVD it fails to reload it to do the verify.
If I manually reload the DVD, K3b just sits there and never starts the verify.
The other half of the time K3b does reload the DVD, but again, just hangs
and never starts the verify. Quitting out of the task works, but the disk
remains unverified.

About 2 times out of 10 it all works. This seems to be independent of which
DVD burner I am using, as it happens on several machines with several different
burners (including machines with more than one burner).
