There are 3 aptitude commands that you have to know:

update		-> fetch a new package list
safe-upgrade	-> upgrade packages without messing with dependencies
full-upgrade	-> upgrade packages, and install or uninstall dependencies
if needed.

You shouldn't use these commands:

upgrade		-> old, deprecated
dist-upgrade	-> old, deprecated
safe-update	-> does not exist

Be careful, spelling really matters.

I understand that the difference between update and upgrade may be
difficult for a native English speaker like you because they are
synonyms. This is when being a non-native actually becomes an advantage. ;-)
