usb hard drives and file recover

Not a good idea to run fsck check on a mounted partition you are
inviting a crash.
boot to a livecd and run your fsck tests
When I cannot find files, I find that using locate  in a terminal
works great, however you do
have to update its internal database with the command updatedb  before
using. the package
locate is not installed in the default Ubuntu, you need to install it.
apt-get update  then apt-get install
locate
