You can also copy fonts to $HOME/.fonts

There's a program in the repos called fontypython that manages
symlinks from wherever your font files are to $HOME/.fonts. It
arranges them into collections called "pogs" so you can turn them on
and off easily. I'm a graphic designer and find it helpful.
