ok, it is possible "autoplay" is disabled in ubuntu.
if using gnome, open up ANY folder on your computer (home, computer....) and
go to the Edit Menu >> Preferences >> Media. Now set all the options to "Ask
what to do"
now "autoplay" should as you how you want to open your cd/dvd media

On the second problem... are you SURE your disc is bootable?
If youre sure it is, then go into the BIOS settings (press F2, F12, Esc or
whatever key required to go into the BIOS Setup) when your computer boots
up. Make sure that in "Boot priority" or whatever its called on your pc,
that your cd drive is at the top of the list (above your harddisk). Save and
exit from the BIOS now.
alternatively, rather than setting the computer to boot off your cd first,
my computer (and some newer models) allow users to select which device to
boot (on my system the Bios setup is opened via pressing the F2 key, and i
can manually select my boot device using F12). if your computer provides
this feature use this instead of messing around with BIOS settings.
