8.04 super slow on dell 2550

Since this doesn't seem like a 'gotta do it now' project - I might try
installing 6.06 or 7.10 and upgrading to Hardy to see if I get the
same results.  I might also try installing 8.10 and seeing if the
problem is still there - if it is at least you've narrowed it down a
bit.  Perhaps looking at the active modules listed would give a clue.

Other random thoughts -
It's worth a post on the ubuntu-server list - more people there likely
familiar with that hardware?
Is the whole gig of ram recognized?
Is swap missing/misconfigured or has a problem so it chokes when it
tries to swap?
