May I humbly suggest you raise this on the Kubuntu-users list?

Most of which you describe is usual for the new KDE 4.x, but not the
reversion to the CLI log-in.  The guys there have much more expertise
with the new KDE desktop that I suggest you'll find here, and can
probably help you more.
