Just some thoughts in case you have no option but reinstall.

If /home has its own partition you could reinstall Ubuntu from a CD
preserving /home.

If there's no partition for /home and providing there is HD space
available, you could shrink the current partition with Gparted, create
a new partition for /home and booting from the Live CD, copy your
/home data to the new partition and then reinstall Ubuntu.

Depending on the size of your /home partition maybe you could use the
Live CD to copy it to another media.

Just my 2 cents.
