reading root's mail

I installed mutt with its exim dependency and the administrative user
(cenbe) is listed in /etc/aliases, but when I open mutt, I get
"/var/mail/cenbe: No such file or directory".  Same thing if I run mutt
as root.  In /var/mail, there's just one file, "mail".

Why can't I read root's mail?
