After a day or two on Evolution I had the same problem. I gave up and 
switched to Thunderbird. (I also created a new non-Gmail account for use 
on this list, but that was to address another issue.)

Gmail handily doesn't places messages you send to lists in your inbox. 
You'll never see your messages to the list using Gmail.
