sounds normal to me.

this has, unfortunately, been normal practice for some Mobo
manufacturers since AM3 chips came out. Its stupid...but it's what they
decided to do. There's complaints all over newegg from people
experiencing the same issue.

If you don't find another CPU soon, let me know... I might be able to
send you a spare one I've got laying around. I'd need it back,
obviously, but I'd be more than happy to help out. Just email me
directly, and we can go from there.

Its frustrating sometimes...but I still wouldn't say it's too hard. If
anything, making your own computer has gotten easier in the past years,
and will probably continue to get easier. Theres
just...hiccups...sometimes.

It would definitely be possible to nab a new PC from Dell/HP and get
linux on it. I know, in the case of Dell at least, they can't void your
warranty for replacing your OS. you might even be able to get your money
back for the windows license (i was directed from someplace, maybe here,
to a blog post about doing just that a little while back... i'll try to
find it). Alternatively, Dell actually sells desktops/laptops with
Ubuntu pre-installed (though it's 8.04LTS I believe, not 9.04), or you
could check out system76 @ http://www.system76.com/ who only sell ubuntu
Desktops/Laptops/Servers. You can also get 9.04 pre-installed on them as
well. The latter might be a better option if you're determined to buy a
pre-built PC, as from system76, you're guaranteed that the hardware will
work perfectly out of box.

*munch munch munch* :)
