all photo programs crash when clicking on import

Siggy,

1. DigiKam, f-spot,gthumb and GtKam respond to the attempt to "import"
images from a camera by silently attempting to open a window. The window
doesn't stay open long enough to see what it is.

2. I am still trying to determine if I properly did my "undos."

3. I attempted to download a newer version of libgphoto2 which was
supposed to support my Canon PowerShot G10.

4. Attempting to set up a camera to import photos, I get no error
message. The applications crash.

5. I took a look at ~/.xsession-errors &c, but nothing jumped out at me.
Then again it all looked like Greek to me!

6. I will go look for a card reader.

THanks for the thoughts
