Internet access : connecting to broadbans using log-in and password ??

Hi list,

I need a littel guidance here.

I connect to internet using a simple cable modem, with a built-in
router. It's all magic : whjen ubuntu starts up, it automatically
connects to internet with DHCP magic. I don't need to supply the system
with any authentication information, and I don't need to configure the
router using web browser or else. It's all very basic and "just works".

Now, my father happens to have a more fancy/modern modem, which has a
built-in web server to let you configure it before you can connect to
the internet. This is done. However, somehow, with this modem you still
DO need to give a user name and pwassord when you want to connect, as
if it were a 10 year old modem with no built-in router, or a dial-up
modem !

Question: I would like to install Ubuntu o my dads computer, sooo...
how do I do to set up a connection to a brandband ADSL modem that
requires username and PW when you ask for it to connect ??
I have ZERO clue :-( because as I said, my modem is much simpler and it
has always worked/connected automagically at power up !

Thanks for any help/pointer...

I do remember when I had a modem without router, that I used the
"pppoeconfig" utility" to give the authentication utility, then this
utility offered to start up the connection automatically at start up. Is
there something similar for modern modems which hav ea fancy router in
them ?

Regards,
