First:
Model name/number of the computer you're trying to install on (if
possible)
Graphics card model?

have you tried using the Hardware Drivers manager? it's available from
"System > Administration > Hardware Drivers". You can usually install
you're graphics card drivers from there no problem. Just be aware that
you need internet for that tool, and sometimes the tool looks like it
has hung (frozen) while downloading the drivers. don't be alarmed, and
don't close it. if it actually HAS frozen, then it will turn gray. if it
doesn't, just let it sit and it will finish (the time depends on your
connection speed, as the download is fairly hefty)

for the sound issue, did you try ubuntu first on a liveCD? if so, did
sound work on the liveCD? If it didn't then chances are you will need a
special driver. If it did, then first make sure your sound isn't muted
on the volume controller. If it's not, go to a terminal (Applications >
Accessories > Terminal) and type in 'alsamixer' then hit return. there
will appear several mixer bars, that indicate your sound-card levels.
use the left/right arrows to move between bars, up/down to raise/lower
the levels, and "M" to mute/unmute channels. if the sound on your panel
is maxed, then theoretically all the bars in alsamixer should be all the
way up in the red, and below them should either be blank, or have a
"00". if any have an "MM" beneath them, then move to them and hit "M"
which should unmute them.

Also, I'll give you some pointers since you're new to the list/ubuntu.
Top-posting is frowned upon here, so when you reply, quote the email
you're replying to, start typing at the bottom, and trim any irrelevent
previous text (like this part of my message for instance). Also when you
trim, make sure you keep the who-said-what tags intact, like what
appears at the top of my email. that way, people's messages will be
associated w/ the right people.

Also, you will want to use more descriptive titles for your issues. This
is a tech-support mailing list. We know you need help. what we don't
know is what you need help with. note the new title, as it has been
modified. that would have been more appropriate title. also note that
since we changed the changed the topic, the old one is also listed. this
is also good practice.

hope that helps!
