Sounds like hardware to me if you can boot froom live CD.  Crack the 
case and see if the hdd is spinning up.  If you have a spare drive, swap 
it out for the old (Put the old drive aside, if it's recoverable or 
unaffected then you want to protect it in a static free bag.)  With the 
spare in place boot to the live CD and see if that drive is visible.  If 
it comes up then you may have an issue with the Original if not your MB 
may be down.

After these first steps we can help based the results.
